Helping the disadvantaged children of Gilgil, Kenya

The Saidia Children's Charity (Kenya) (formerly called Mji wa Neema) was formed to help the disadvantaged children of Gilgil, Kenya. Together with our American sister charity, The Orphan Support League, we aim to assist parentless or displaced children and give them hope for the future. Our team in the UK are all volunteers, and 100% of the money received by us goes directly to our sponsored projects. Nobody takes a salary and no money is spent on advertising or administration. The charity's expenses are paid for by board members, not from donations. If you want more information email us at contact@saidiacc.org or use the PayPal button to make a donation.

Our Story

The Saidia Children's Charity (Kenya) was co-founded by Kenyan born Anne Mitchell and Jill Simpson, M.B.E in 2002, and is registered as a charity in the UK (No: 1099611).

All of our UK trustees and fund-raisers, and the board in Kenya, work on an entirely voluntary basis - nobody takes a salary. We support our chosen projects directly, so we know that 100% of the money we receive from donations is always used as intended, and our representatives makes regular site visits.

Our funding comes entirely from private donations, so we are always looking for contributors, particularly those who can commit to a regular monthly payment to help sponsor a child or to contribute to the orphanage costs.

Please explore the rest of this site to find out more about the various projects we support, and consider making a donation or regular payment.

The Home

Children are only taken to the Saidia Children's Home when there is no other option.

Saidia is run as a family not as institution. However, providing food and shelter is not enough, and we involve children as deeply as possible in every aspect of the running of the home, from helping to care for the babies to household chores. We also provide a stable, secure and loving environment where our children can develop self-esteem and confidence and we help to fund essential educational opportunities to give children a bright future.

THE BONDENI PROJECT

The Bondeni Project was started in 2008 to assist second-generation street children, born to the first AIDS orphans who grew up on the streets.

Many of these children live in an area called Bondeni (Gilgil's red light district) and try to support their children or siblings through prostitution or selling "Chang'aa" - an illegal moonshine (Chang'aa literally means "kill me quick"). The infants are often hungry and sometimes they are given alcohol to keep them quiet when there is no food.

The Bondeni nursery was set up initially in a derelict shed to ensure these children got at least one meal a day. Now, through donations, we have bought a plot of land and erected a safe and secure building where up to 80 children a day are fed and looked after in a kindergarten.

On Saturdays the school is used to give essential life skills workshops to some of the older children in the community.
